Facial surgery
As aging occurs skin and other tissues lose their elasticity with stretching of collagen causing the typical features that we see in the aging face. These include a looseness of skin which may fall into folds, jowl formation, prominence under the chin, and wrinkling and lining of the skin.
Face lifting and associated procedures correct the changes that have occurred with facial aging by repositioning and re-contouring facial structures and removing excess skin. The re-contouring is done in layers of tissue deep to the skin and does not rely on skin tension to create the change. Creating too much tension in the skin leaves an unnatural “face lifted” look and the skin will stretch again quite quickly reducing the benefit of surgery. It is also important to remember that face lifting surgery does not alter the nature and texture of the skin so fine wrinkles will persist particularly around the mouth.
A traditional face lift involves a scar running from within the hair of the temple, down in front of the ear, turning up behind the ear, and into the hair following the hair margin behind the ear. The skin is lifted off the underlying structures which can then be re-positioned or tightened.
