Procedures to the opposite breast to achieve symmetry

All methods of breast reconstruction have limitations as to the size and shape of the breast that can be created. If a patient has very large breasts it may be either impossible or undesirable to create a breast of similar size and a reduction of the opposite breast is often advantageous. This can be achieved using standard breast reduction techniques.

If the opposite breast is too droopy it can be reshaped using a mastopexy technique which tightens the skin envelope but maintains volume of the breast.

The Latissimus dorsi flap, in particular, creates quite a firm breast which may not match a soft, rather empty breast. If necessary an implant can be used in the opposite breast to give a breast of greater projection and increased firmness to match the reconstruction. This is done using standard breast augmentation techniques.
